The Enneagram: A Christian Perspective

by Richard Rohr & Andreas Ebert

'The Enneagram: A Christian perspective' is exactly that! It's a very helpful explanation of the Enneagram system from a Christian viewpoint. It doesn't have the useful questionnaires that some of the other books do, but it has helpful descriptions of each of the nine types, particularly from the viewpoint of likely churchmanship, preferred styles of prayer and worship, and so on, as well as more general descriptions.

A little heavy in places, and it would be hard to follow if someone knew nothing about the Enneagram in advance, but recommended for anyone wanting to reconcile this fascinating personality system with Christian belief.

Ones, are the:, Perfectionist, Reformer, Judge, Crusader, Critic

Temperament Type One

Temperament Type One have an innate ability to assess potential for improvement in any situation. They quite naturally notice what is right or wrong in all areas of life and are highly motivated to improve it. Often they intuit the best way to do a job or solve a problem very quickly. Ones are responsible, dependable people who pride themselves on their honesty and integrity. These idealists of the Enneagram can contribute ideas and energy for reform.

They want to be accurate, thorough, fair and objective. More importantly, they want to be respectable, to do what is right and what they feel is appropriate. they see themrself as rational, orderly and principled. they would like others to see them as reliable, responsible and ethical. They idealized image is that they are hardworking and do what is right.

They have a fine eye for detail. They are always aware of the flaws in themselves, others and the situations in which they find themselves. This triggers their need to improve, which can be beneficial for all concerned, but which can also prove to be burdensome to both the them and those who are on the receiving end of their reform efforts.

Gifted with a strong sense of purpose, they have high ideals and like to follow protocol, policies and procedures. They are sincere, earnest and diligent. They like to excel and take pride in doing things well. They value honesty, integrity and objectivity. Conscientious and methodical they focus on paying close attention to detail. Earnest and hardworking, they are particular and constantly strive to improve. They take action from their heart because, for them, the heart is the only thing that is truly perfect.

They have a strong ‘internal critic’ that reminds them of what they should and shouldn’t do. At times, they can be judgmental and critical of others, telling them what they think is right. They behave this way because they want to help people avoid mistakes. They believe that there is only one way to do things and that is the right way. As a Temperament Type One, they feel that if something is worth doing, it is worth doing right. As a result, they are only satisfied with what appeals to their strong sense of what is moral. Idealistic, they naturally wish to educate others to help them improve themselves.

They are serious people; they tend to be highly principled, competent and uncompromising. They follow the rules and expect others to do so as well. Because they believe so thoroughly in their convictions, they are often excellent leaders who can inspire those who follow them with their own vision of excellence. Reform movements are frequently spearheaded by them.

Life for they is about adhering to their strong internal set of standards. Sometimes, they wish that they could let go and have more fun. This can be hard for they to do unless they are on vacation because of theyr strong work ethic. They innately recognize that in most situations there are standard operational procedures. Privately, They may criticize themself for their shortcomings far more than they ever criticize anyone else. Because they can be so hard on themself, they long for positive feedback, serenity and happiness.

Why aren’t all people with a given Temperament Type successful?

You probably know a bunch of people with the same Temperament Type. Why are some successful and others are not. Why the difference? The difference is Emotional Intelligence. We use Emotional Quotient. (EQ) as a shorthand to describe Emotional Intelligence.

A person may have a high IQ. They did well in school, maybe have a college diploma or even an advanced degree. They may even be in MENSA, the select high-IQ club and still fail in business and relationships. Why are they not successful?

The answer:

Your IQ determines 20 % of your success, which leaves 80% to other forces. This is stated by Daniel Goleman the Author of “Emotional Intelligence.”

A person with a high IQ does not mean they know how to manage their thoughts and feelings any more successfully than a person with a low IQ. Success requires taking the emotional data, making sense of that data, and integrating it into your decision-making. People with higher EQ does this better.

By increasing your EQ you can use your thoughts and emotions of your Temperament Type to make the best possible decisions. Increased EQ help you get optimal results from your relationships with yourself and others.

EQ challenges the conventional belief that emotions are in the way of good decisions. By increasing your EQ it is possible to learn how to use your emotions to make better decisions. By increasing your EQ, it is possible to increase your wisdom and energy required for high performance. The Increasing your EQ is a teachable life skill. If people get better at these life skills, everyone benefits: The brain doesn't distinguish between being a more empathetic manager and a more empathetic father
